• Most compact way to correct refraction
  • Continuous adjustment in real-time
  • +/- 20 diopters spherical, +/- 8 diopters cylindrical (Stokes approach)

There is no more natural way to compensate for visual defects of the human eye than by using focus tunable lenses, which basically work according to the same principles. Currently, most ophthalmic equipment rely on manual selection and alignment of one or several glass lenses to achieve the desired correction. With focus tunable lenses, correction can be done with one single lens, which can be adjusted continuously and precisely in real-time. Spherical lenses can be built with apertures of up to 40mm and optical power ranging from -20 to +20 diopters.

Applications:

  • Subjective refraction (Phoropters)
  • Autorefractometers (‚fogging‘)
  • Perimeters
  • OCT
  • Retina imaging

Subjective refraction

Combining a spherical tunable lens with 2 individually rotatable glass cylinder lenses (Stokes approach), compact subjective refraction modules can be conceived that can measure +/- 20 diopters spherical and -8 to 0 diopters cylinder.

OCT

Electrical focus tunable lenses can extend the limited scan range of spectral domain and swept source OCT systems. This allows to continuously scan the whole depth from cornea to retina for biometry (narrow field of view) without loss in lateral resolution.

Electrical tunable lenses are also suitable for Microscope-integrated intraoperative OCT. The electrically tunable lens EL-10-30-NIR-LD allows real-time adjustment of the OCT focal plane to maintain parfocality with the microscope view. This allowed us to compensate for changes between the microscope and OCT focus when switching between anterior and posterior segment imaging, for different microscope zoom positions, and for refractive power differences between surgeons.
